Gaelic Games Promotion Day
Almost three hundred fifth and sixth class boys and girls attended our one day Gaelic Games Promotion Day which was held in Semple Stadium and Dr Morris Park on Thursday last. The day started with a tour of Semple Stadium before the boys and girls rotated between six different coaching stations, each focusing on some of the key skills of both football and hurling. Our G.A.A. coaches were ably assisted on the day by past pupils; Ronan Maher, Pa Bourke, Denis Maher and Cathal Barrett. The school would like to thank the primary schools and the pupils’ parents for helping to facilitate this very successful event.
On Wednesday last our junior golfers travelled to Cahir Park Golf Club to compete in the East Munster Qualifying Section of the Schools Junior Golf Competition. The team consisted of Cian Stakelum, Jack Ryan and Aaron Quinn and although they played well they did not progress to the next phase of the competition.
Last Monday representatives from the A.I.B. conducted interviews in the school to fill the positions available in this year’s school bank. In total there were twenty seven interviews and the school would like to congratulate the chosen candidates on being selected. Jason Jordan will be the Bank Manager this year with Michael Purcell as Assistant Manager. The position of Sales and Marketing Director went to Conor Ryan while Darren O Sullivan and Jack Moore were chosen as Customer Service Operators. Eddie O Gorman will be Financial Controller. They will undertake a training and induction day this week to prepare them for their year’s work.
On Monday last our third and sixth year students attended separate study skills seminars which were delivered by educational experts, The Super Generation. The pupils learnt about the importance of planning as well as a series of memory aide techniques such as mind-mapping.
Our senior hurlers got this year’s Harty campaign off to a successful start last Wednesday with a convincing victory over St. Flannan’s College in the first game of the group stages. Thurles were too strong for their opponents on the day and ended up winning the game on a scoreline of 5-26 to 6 points. Well done to all involved.
Dean Ryan Hurling
On Monday last, our Dean Ryan hurlers played a useful challenge match against St. Kieran’s of Kilkenny while on Tuesday our first year hurlers took on St. Coleman’s in a practice game.
On Tuesday and Wednesday of last week our school chaplain, Fr Martin Hayes, celebrated a series of masses for the individual year groups. These masses were a nice way to mark the beginning of a new school year as the school community was brought together in celebration of our faith.
The Open Night for CBS Thurles will take place on Tuesday 21st October. All 6th class boys and their parents/guardians are invited to attend on the night and experience what the school has to offer. The principals address will be at 7.30pm followed by tours of the school.
