More Basketball Success

CBS Thurles crowned All Ireland Basketball Champions

 

CBS Thurles Under 16 Basketball team enjoyed enormous success this year, winning both the Midlands League and National Cup competitions and last week capturing the League Final.  This recent success is testament to the growth of the sport in the school over recent years. In the early stages of the League Competition, the team were victorious over Mullingar Community College on a scoreline of 62-8. They then played Scoil Mhuire from Clane and were again successful on a scoreline of 49-6. From there, they qualified for the Midlands League Semi Final where Kildare Town Community School provided the opposition.

The team again had a comprehensive victory with the game finishing 56-21. Next up was the Midlands Final against Heywood Community College. After an outstanding performance by the team, they emerged victorious beating Heywood 42-18. Following the Midlands League campaign, we then hosted the All Ireland League Play-offs where we were met with opposition from Drimnagh Castle Dublin and St. Brendan's Belmullet. Winning both games here meant progression to the All-Ireland League Semi-Final, held in the National Basketball Arena, Tallaght.

Here we played the Presentation Secondary School, Miltown, Killarney and again after an excellent team performance, the boys were victorious on a scoreline of 44-33. On February 23rd, the boys faced Coláiste Dún Iascaigh from Cahir in the All Ireland League Final, again played in the National Basketball Arena.  After a very tough and close game, the boys were again successful winning the game 52-40. The team as a whole were outstanding, with Sean Mockler receiving the MVP award.As well as the League, the boys competed in the National Cup Competition.

Our first game in this competition was away to Blackrock College, Dublin where the boys came away with a great result, 46-6. We then played Waterpark College from Waterford. An excellent display was again rewarded with a comprehensive victory. The game finished 67-11. Next up was a Cup Semi-Final date with Saint Munchins, Limerick. The team were again successful and came away with a win on a score of 45-25. The final game in the Cup Competition was held in the National Basketball  Arena. Our opposition on this occasion was St. Nathys from Ballaghedereen and after an excellent team performance, the boys were victorious on a scoreline of 37-23.  Sean Mockler was again awarded the MVP award after an outstanding display.
