All Ireland Success for CBS Thurles

CBS Thurles athletes ended a great year with a powerful performance at the GloHealth Irish Schools Track & Field Championships in Tullamore on Saturday 30th May. It was a super Saturday for our athletes who won a total of 9 medals, including 6 Irish Schools titles, 2 silver & 1 bronze between them also taking home for CBS Thurles, the Junior Boys Shield for Best Scoring School. All 5 athletes produced great performances & personal bests throughout the day in 11 different events.




Daniel Ryan produced a stunning performance in the Inter Boys Long Jump leaping out to a huge new personal best of 7.10m to equal the Schools record & exceed the European Youth standard of 6.80m. Shortly after his record performance, he ran the 100mH where he won his second gold medal with a blistering run of 13.07, another new personal best & just short of the 12.97 record. Sean Mockler also produced a stunning set of results to win double gold in the Junior Boys Discus (42.23) & Hammer (47.80m) with Liam McDonagh walking his way to gold in the Junior Boys 1200m Walk with his winning time of 6.07.05, a personal best by 21 seconds. David Ryan produced another class performance in the Junior Boys Long Jump to win gold with his leap of 6.34m, well ahead of the opposition also recording a personal best  of 23.18 in the 200m later in the day to win silver. His younger brother Jack won silver in the Minor Boys Long Jump with a jump of 5.10m, his best ever & bronze in the Shot Putt with a throw of 12.20m.  CBS Thurles won the Junior Boys Shield for Highest Scoring team winning with 45 points, well clear of Bangor Grammer in 2nd place on 24 points, also placing 3rd in the Minor competition & 6th in the Inter competition. Well done to all our athletics on a great finish to a memorable year.



Indoor Athletics

Our athletes had a very successful outing last Tuesday when they travelled to Nenagh Olympic Athletics Club’s indoor arena to compete in the Munster Schools Indoor Athletics meeting. In the minor category David Ryan of first year came first in every event he competed in, winning gold in the sixty metre sprint, the shot put and the long jump while fellow first year pupil, Sean Mockler , took the silver medal in the shot put. In the Junior category Jack Fallon of second year won silver in the 1,200 metres and came sixth in the long jump. Jack Dolan won a gold medal in the 600 metres with a time of 1 minute and 34 seconds, a full seven seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. Declan Ryan came seventh in the long jump while the three Junior boys and David Ryan of first year won gold in the Junior relay. At Intermediate level Daniel Ryan of second year won gold in the 60 metres hurdle, the shot put and the long jump. Michael Foley of fifth year won his 600 metres heat but unfortunately his time was not fast enough to claim overall victory.

Athletics The East Munster Boys Track and Field competition took place in Templemore on Wednesday last.  Again, the CBS were well represented and amassed 21 medals in total.In the minor category Fred Crowley, Jack Hickey and Ben O'Dwyer claimed bronze in their respective categories; the 1500m, 800m and 200m. The minor relay team of Fred Crowley, Jack Hickey, Kieran Moloney and Ben O'Dwyer came third and claimed the bronze medals. In the Junior category, Jack Dolan took gold in the 800m while Declan Ryan took gold in the High Jump and silver in the Long Jump.  David Ryan won gold in the Discus and Shot and Sean Mockler won gold in the Hammer and silver in the Discus. In the Intermediate category Kieran Hennessy won a gold medal in the Steeplechase, Brandon Shanahan picked up a gold medal in the Shot and Mateusz Pietrizykowski won silver in the Long Jump.  Daniel Ryan had convincing wins taking gold in both the 100m Hurdles and Long Jump. In the Senior category Dean Campion won gold in the Long Jump and bronze in the 200m.All these boys now qualify to compete in the Munster Track and Field competition in CIT on Saturday the 17th of May.
